I-95/SR 896 Interchange Project, Newark, Delaware

I-95/SR 896 Interchange Project, Newark, Delaware

The I-95/SR 896 Interchange is a major interstate exit for the city of Newark, Delaware and is located approximately 2.5 miles from the Delaware/Maryland state line.  Major congestion frequently occurs at the interchange as well as on I-95 and SR 896 during peak rush hours and other times due to both commuter and pass-thru traffic on the heavily traveled I-95 interstate corridor.  The frequency of these traffic problems has increased over a prolonged period of time.  Traffic safety is another major issue at this particular exit.  The I-95/SR 896 interchange is also the major exit for the main campus of the University of Delaware.  This project aims to alleviate congestion and provide relief for traffic issues in this well populated and still growing part of Delaware.  The solution that was selected from 3 competing alternatives involves the reconfiguration and/or realignment of several on/off ramps as well as roadway additions to increase capacity.  This new design features the addition of 11 new structures to the interchange area including the creation of two new flyovers.  N&W, as a sub-consultant, is handling the geotechnical engineering for the majority of these new bridges and structures.  N&W was chosen by the DelDOT design team for the project and utilizes N&W staff from both its New Cumberland and King of Prussia offices.  The project involves four (4) bridges over the Christina River, two (2) bridges over Norfolk Southern railroad lines, two (2) bridges over Chapel Street, two (2) curved flyover structures above I-95, one (1) continuation flyover above SR 896, and one (1) additional viaduct over I-95.  There are also a number of retaining walls, concrete barriers and berms involved with this project.  Design is currently underway and N&W is heavily involved.  Final Design is expected to be complete by 2021 and construction is scheduled to begin in 2023.  Completion is expected to be during 2026.
